About Our School

Prince Charles School is an alternative program offered by Edmonton Public Schools.  Jenny Margetts, Nellie Carlson and other concerned parents and grandparents founded the Awasis Program in 1973.  The word "Awasis" is the cree word for child.  The Awasis Program is designed to meet the needs of urban Aboriginal children and families.  The program follows the Alberta Learning curriculum and integrates Aboriginal content into all subject areas.

School Community Profile
Prince Charles School serves both the Prince Charles and Sherbrooke communities.  Approximately 10% of the students who attend the school actually live in the community.  The remaining 90% come to school from 51 different school catchment areas by yellow bus to attend the Awasis Urban Aboriginal Program.  Approximately 92-95% of the students attending the school have Aboriginal ancestry.  All K-6 students are provided with a School Lunch through a subsidy received from the Edmonton City Center Church Corporation and parent contributions.
